Sanctification is an essential aspect of the life of a Christ-follower. Romans 6 makes this truth abundantly clear.
A.W. Tozer said, “The Holy Spirit never enters a man and then lets him live like the world. You can be sure of that.”
Charles Spurgeon said, “If he gives you the grace to make you believe, he will give you the grace to live a holy life afterward.”
John Piper said, “I know of no other way to triumph over sin long-term than to gain a distaste for it because of a superior satisfaction in God.”
Thomas Watson said, “”It is absurd to imagine that God should justify a people and not sanctify them, He should justify a people whom He could not glorify.”
Sanctification is a process of progressively becoming and embracing being ‘set apart by God’ in holiness and Christlikeness. While our position in Christ as new creations, having been justified by grace through faith, is secured forever, there is a progressive aspect in which we become and embrace holiness and Christlikeness as new creations. I like to call this process the ‘under construction’ phase. God is molding, shaping, guiding, directing, and bringing to life a new creation with a new heart and mind that reveals new desires and affections for the things of God.
During this process a believer will engage in two simultaneous and continuous aspects of sanctification. These two aspects are mortification and vivification. Mortification is the killing of sin in the life of a believer. It is the tearing down and destroying of sinful habits. It is the putting or throwing off and shedding of the old man (Ephesians 4:22; Romans 6:6). Vivification is the bringing to life of the new man. It is the active pursuit of holiness. It is the building up, embracing, and living of new Godly habits.
These two aspects of sanctification are a crucial part of your life with Christ. Below you will find some resources to assist in mortifying the flesh and vivifying your walk with Christ.
